Our road safety

Tanzania's roads link busy towns, rural routes, and growing highways.

Common rules and regulations

Valid driving licence

While learning and after you qualify, your driving licence is essential proof that you may drive.

Driving side & overtaking

Tanzania follows keep-left driving.

Speed limits

Speed limits are set for towns, villages, residential areas, and highways.

Driving under influence

Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or substances that impair judgment is a serious criminal offence in Tanzania.

Seat belts & child safety

Seat belts must be worn by drivers and passengers where fitted.

Reckless driving

Reckless driving — weaving through traffic, tailgating, refusing to stay in lane, or racing — endangers everyone.

Traffic signals & road signs

Drivers and riders must obey traffic lights, stop lines, and road signs.

Distractions

Using a phone, eating, adjusting controls carelessly, or turning to talk to passengers divides attention.

Tyre condition

Worn, damaged, or expired tyres reduce grip and increase stopping distance — especially in rain.

Window tint

Window tint must comply with national regulations.

Noise pollution

Modified exhausts, horns used unnecessarily, and loud sound systems disturb communities.

Crowding accident scenes

Do not crowd accident scenes or film injured people without permission.

Illegal passenger transport

Private vehicles must not operate as unlicensed taxis or “pirate” passenger services.

Abrupt swerving

Sudden lane changes without signalling confuse other road users and cause sideswipe crashes.

Claiming impounded vehicles

If your vehicle is impounded, claim it promptly when authorised.

Safe following distance

Keep enough space between your vehicle and the one ahead so you can stop safely if they brake suddenly.

Other behaviour to avoid

Responsible drivers avoid these common mistakes:
